Week 2 of the Aquathon League saw competitive racing across all events. 10 or so future starts got the night going in the always exciting Splash & Dash. These kids smiles just sum up what the sport is all about.
Next up were the Juniors taking on a tricky 100m swim / 1km run / 100m swim / 1km run with the dreaded wet wetsuit-on transition. With a handful of Juniors stepping up to the adult course the race was between Ben O’Neill and Darragh Hickey, with the Shannon Flyer taking line honours ahead of the fast improving Hickey, who just last year was a splasher and dasher. Other great performances in the junior race came from debutants Erin Reidy Bond and Jimmy Dwyer and Georgia Reidy Bond. Great fun and great improvements all round. Doing it, not just talking about it!
Next up was the main race – 500M / 1.5km / 500M / 1.5km. 29 starters in 4 waves. Working the handicaps super juniors Luke and Darragh O’Neill and Jamie Kelly were first out of the water, with Seniors Brendan Cross and Patricia O’Brien in hot pursuit. However, by the time second swim came around the decision to go Skins for round 2 paid off for the sharks with Jason Fitz leading out the run ahead of Bobby Boru. At race end Jason held on for the win, Bobby 2nd and junior Luke O’Neill in third. Becky de Bullet was first lady, only 9 seconds to spare over Limerick junior Elaine Yelverton with the flying vet Victoria Nickolson in 3rd. Full results and league table attached. It all goes down to Night 3 – the decider.
Thanks to helpers, spectators, parents, participants and ULAC for a great night of fun. See you all tomorrow night
